Roof square measurement.

One roofing square is equal to 100 square feet. The base width is the distance from one corner of your roof to the other at its base on the short side of your house. Instead a square is a term of measurement all its own.

If you are replacing your entire roof you will need to purchase shingles in 50 squares to sufficiently cover your 5 000 square foot roof. This refers to the roof area that measures approximately 100 square feet. As you have noticed in the roofing industry however the surface of the roof is being measured in squares. If your roof is 5 000 square feet you will have 50 squares.

Essentially it is 100 square feet or a 10 10 block. While it is possible to estimate the amount of necessary materials using only the total roof area measurement as can be seen from the table depending how large the pitch of the roof the actual area of the roof can differ by up to 2 236 from the measured total area at a pitch of 24 12. Don t use this as your only method of measuring. In the roofing industry the term square is unique.

Our roof calculator uses base length and base width to find the estimated area. Make sure to document the number of chimneys skylights or other obstructions and include dormers in your measurements. If your roof measures 48 feet 15 m x 24 feet 7 3 m multiplying its length by its width would give you a square footage of 1 152 square feet 107 0 m 2. If its pitch is 6 in 12 a pitch multiplier of 1 12 multiplying 1 152 sq ft 107 0 m 2 by 1 12 would give you an overall square footage of 1 290 square feet 120 m 2.

Also roofing and siding are a commodity now days so even if you are off by a few sq. 1 square in roofing 100 square feet. Feet it is fine. Each square is 100 square feet.

Make a sketch of your roof before you go out to measure it. How to calculate your roof square footage first measure the length and width of each surface on the roof then multiply these values to get the square footage of that surface. Keep in mind that using google earth isn t going to give you a 100 percent accurate reading but it will give you a basic idea of the size of the roof for your calculations for the roofing materials.
